I just tried to repro the problem here in 2011 and can't, whether I apply a shadow to the text itself or to the shape that holds the text. This was a problem with earlier versions of PPT, I know, especially when the shadow had been applied in a version that used the old PPT format and then played back/edited in newer versions. This is so counter-intuitive to the default way the shadow and text should act.
